The phlebotomy training program at FranU is designed to prepare students to perform the essential job functions as a phlebotomist in the healthcare industry. Phlebotomists may work in hospitals, medical labs, private practices or blood donation centers and must be prepared to work with patients across the lifespan.
Our comprehensive program consists of 11 weeks of phlebotomy training, including 8 weeks at our Baton Rouge campus, during which students will learn both in the lab and in clinical settings. This hands-on experience is a critical component of the program, allowing students to put their education into practice.
Open to students of many backgrounds - Whether you’re a senior in high school, recent high school graduate, GED or HiSET holder or member of the Louisiana National Guard Job Challenge Program, you may be eligible for admission to the program.
Clinical and classroom experience - The clinical internship portion of the phlebotomy program requires successful completion of 125 venipuncture draws and dermal punctures. You’ll also learn anatomy, medical terminology, infection control, safety instruction, patient specimen collection, equipment usage and special procedures in the classroom.
11-week program - Students enrolled in this 11-week program will participate in eight weeks of classroom instruction (8:00 am-11:30 am) and three weeks of hands-on clinical practice (typically during daytime hours). The course meets three days per week for the first eight weeks.

Three start dates - Don’t let your schedule get in the way of your goals. The phlebotomy training program is offered three times a year, beginning in January, May and September, offering added flexibility for your busy schedule.
A path toward licensure - Upon completion of the phlebotomy training course, students are eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) Examination to become licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
There are no course prerequisites for admission to the phlebotomy program. Prospective students are required to meet one of the below listed criteria:
Senior high school student with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and parental/guardian consent if under the age of 18.
Graduate from high school with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
Completion of the GED exam with a minimum score of 400.
Completion of the HiSET with a minimum score of 40.
Additionally, students must meet FranU's health and safety requirements, including current American Heart Association CPR Healthcare Provider Certification. There are also health and immunization requirements.
There is a $35 application fee to apply to the phlebotomy training program.
The cost of the phlebotomy program is $3,304.76 plus the cost of books and uniform (~$160 total). The cost does not include fees charged to register for the ASCP exam. There is also a cost for completing the items necessary for the health packet; this cost varies per student.
With a growing need for healthcare professionals, it’s no wonder that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that jobs in phlebotomy will increase by 10% over the next 10 years—that’s faster than the national average of 5% for all occupations. This increase in career opportunities is expected to result in 13,900 jobs.
The phlebotomy career track is an excellent stepping stone for other occupations in the healthcare industry. The hands-on experience you’ll gain as a phlebotomist by directly working with patients as the face of the laboratory team will prepare you to pivot your career to a healthcare profession such as medical laboratory science and nursing.
