Great Books Seminar II: Autobiography/Confession

Can an autobiography be true? What is self-revelation? Who is the audience for a confession? Does privacy and withholding have a place in this genre? What is the role of secrecy in self-presentation? This course explores confessional literature. Beginning with Augustine’s Confessions, the readings will span to contemporary examples of autobiographical literature. The autobiographies studied could include multiple forms, such as poetry, letters, and prose. The narratives will guide students through explorations of the human condition throughout the world and across eras.
