Great Books Seminar I: The Classical World

What can we learn by reading and examining texts from the classical world? What is being expressed and questioned in the epics, tragedies, and comedies of the classical world? What were their understandings of the human condition? Other topics that may be examined include identity, belonging, family, friendship, love, conflict, war, tolerance, art, music, hospitality, drinking, commerce, and religion. This course explores classical literature primarily by ancient Greek and Roman authors. Readings may also include classical literature from other ancient societies.
